Bohumil Doboš, Ph.D. Year of the defence: 2021 Abstract The sustainability of the outer space environment is necessary for all actors to execute all existing and future human space operations safely. While the severe negative consequences of the uncontrolled space debris population are not new, government agencies and intergovernmental organizations' initiatives to lessen the predicament continue to be insufficient. Scientific research and simulation models show that mere mitigation measures cannot stop the ongoing degradation of the outer space environment polluted from the past space missions. Instead, research supports the development of space projects designed with a primary objective to remove debris from space. National administrations attempt to cooperate at the international level to formulate uniform debris mitigation standards and hold each other mutually accountable for worsening the space debris situation. Outer Space Activities & Environmental Protection Abstract This thesis aims at addressing various connecting factors between outer space activities and environmental protection. It examines the present legal regime of the outer space with particular regard to the environmental protection. The analysis of the most relevant space treaties is provided, reviewing the provisions concerning the protection of the environment, while addressing the emerging environmental issues. The significant role of international bodies is being emphasized, as well as the current challenges the regime of outer space is facing. Although the space-related activities offer an extensive tool to enhance environmental protection of Earth, the environment of space is nowadays being exposed to an imminent threat called space debris, which could prevent all possible future space activities if left unattended. The pollution of the space environment is at a critical level, and the international community is required to respond within a short time in the future. The introduction of mitigating efforts will no longer itself be effective without the addition of active employment of remediating measures, such as the active debris removal. Pollution of the earth's orbit in the context of the theory of property rights

Earth's orbit as a space for placement of telecommunication satellites and other objects is growing in importance for the economic development of mankind. Serious problem, however, is the so-called space debris pollution from human activities. The aim of this work is to provide a comprehensive view of the Earth's orbit contamination in relation to the institution of property rights. First, the discussion focuses on current international legal arrangements in this area, its development and implications. This is followed by an economic analysis of a space pollution, the argument is considered that pollution of the orbit is a logical consequence of incompletely specified property rights. The thesis also deals with the establishment of property rights with respect to whether the institute is viable and economically efficient. The conclusion of the work presents a discussion of alternatives in solving the problem of manmade space pollution.
